The non-toxic, pest management market is a worldwide, multi-billion dollar enterprise. The US EPA estimated 2001 sales of factory-level pesticides to be $32 B, with annual expenditures on pest control estimated to be greater than $200 B, when downstream and value-added services are included.  Over 1880 basic pesticide producers exist around the world, but the market is now dominated by 7 major pesticide companies. Because of environmental and health concerns, there is a significant trend for withdrawal of conventional chemical pesticides from the market.
